Prima Quartet Live

By Niamh McGowan

description

Niamh McGowan (Violin), Catherine Humphreys (Violin), Joanna Byrne (Viola) and Aoife Dennedy (Cello) of Prima String Quartet come from the breadth of Ireland from Derry to Cork. We were brought together by friendship and a passion for playing new and exciting chamber music.

We have, for a long time, wanted to commission a challenging composition for performance with visual projections featuring current and quality artists whose genius lends itself so well to the String Quartet. The opportunity to perform such a set has now presented itself to us with Derry City of Culture 2013's Culture Tech Festival.

Michael Doherty is a Derry born, successful and active composer based in Manchester. Having recently arranged the likes of Muse for The Herbert Cello Quartet to great acclaim he was our first choice as the man for the job. The composition that we will be commissioning from Michael will be like a modern DJ set with tracks merging seamlessly into one another against the backdrop of carefully constructed visual projections which will undoubtedly enhance the audience experience.

The audience will be invited to enjoy complex, expansive and exciting arrangements of Muse, Radiohead, Daft punk and the Cinematic Orchestra with a few surprises thrown in!

The debut performance of this work will take place in one of Derry City of Culture 2013's newest performance spaces 'An Culturlann' on 1st September 2012 as part of Derry's Cutlure Tech Festival.

Following anticipated success at The Culture Tech Festival we plan to take this composition further afield and give additional performances in Belfast and Dublin throughout the year.

For this to happen we need your help to fund the commission of the composition, the production of our visual projections and to produce an audio CD of the composition. This is a new venture for us and we have exciting projects in the pipeline. We would love you to be a part of it.

Thank you all for taking the time read about our ideas and for making this project a real possibility.

Day 3 Live on Fundit .ie

Big thanks to our newest funders, Kevin Healy, Sarah Wiley and Paddy English and of course to our anonymous funders, we are so grateful for your support. I thought I would try a wee experiment this morning in the run up to Culture Tech Festival. My quartet buddies are scattered over the country (and in Columbia!) at the minute so I decided to try to record an entire quartet (demo) by myself using a viola to play the cello part. Have a listen! Thanks Dermot for recording! http://soundcloud.com/prima-quartet/radiohead-no-surprises-prima

Our composition is well underway thanks to your support and we are looking forward to rehearsals! Big thank you from Niamh, Catherine, Jo and Aoife
