This album celebrates the vibrant creative legacy of Irish choral music, featuring traditional works by established canonical composers such as Stanford, alongside a dynamic array of new works by emergent Irish composers.
The CD showcases the three winning compositions of the 2014 Mornington Singers Composition Competition— Mark Armstrong’s Dreaming, Seán Doherty’s Under-Song and Eoin Mulvany’s Is úar geimred— alongside beautiful contemporary works by Rhona Clarke, Colin Mawby, Frank Corcoran, Éna Brennan, Eoghan Desmond and Caitríona Ní Dhubhghail.
Mornington Singers is an award-winning mixed-voice choir based in Dublin and conducted by Orla Flanagan. The choir has around forty singers from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities including Ireland, England, Wales, Germany, Slovakia, Australia and the USA.
Dr Orla Flanagan is Assistant Professor of Music at Trinity College, Dublin. She studied conducting with Prof. Péter Erdei at the Zoltán Kodály Institute of Music, Hungary, and has participated in courses and masterclasses throughout Europe. In 2012 Orla was awarded a Doctorate of Music in Performance from Dublin City University, the first doctorate in choral conducting to be awarded in Ireland.
Because of the daunting costs involved in hiring singers and musicians, recording equipment, professional sound engineers, producer, studio etc., many Irish composers never get the opportunity to have their works recorded and released.
Mornington Singers have always championed Irish choral music and believe that excellence in music is something to nurture, encourage, celebrate and enjoy. We do not receive any external funding or sponsorship from other bodies, relying instead on our own concerts and fundraising. Without this additional funding, this CD would not be a possibility.
Our budget for this CD is estimated at around €15,000. We have received funding from Dublin City Council of €2,000 which has been put towards venue hire and recording equipment. Money raised through this fundit campaign will go towards CD manufacturing and digital mastering costs, which forms a substantial part of this overall budget.
We hope to reach a wider audience through this campaign and with your help and support hope that our listeners will be transported by the radiant dreamscapes created by these choral works.
If you wish to help fund this worthy project, we would greatly appreciate it, and our Rewards start with a free copy of the new CD for your contribution of €25.
