The Reich Effect

By Cork Opera House

description

'There's just a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history and Steve Reich is one of them.' The Guardian (London)

The extraordinary musical influence of Steve Reich and his compositions are the focus of The Reich Effect, a marathon weekend spanning 27 - 31 July.

It kicks off with the film Steve Reich - Phase to Face, followed by a public interview with Reich conducted by John Kelly. Other highlights include a performance from Kronos Quartet which includes the Irish premiere of Reich’s new string quartet “WTC 9/11”; RTÉ Concert Orchestra performing works by Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) and Kjartan Sveinsson (SigurRos); London Sinfonietta; Efterklang and Daniel Bjarnason and the Messing Orchestra; Johann Johannsson; and Crash Ensemble with Iarla Ó Lionáird and Gavin Friday.

Crash Ensemble will also perform Double Sextet for which Steve Reich was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2009.

We’ve also got three special programmes of Reich’s music: Counterpoint, Drumming and Phases. Counterpoint and Drumming include exclusive Cork Opera House dance commissions by David Bolger of CoisCeim and Nic Gaireiss.

What your money will be for…

We want to spread this festival out beyond the ticketed events so a free programme is being put together to include special pop-up events in unexpected places. That's where your support comes in. We aim for Cork city to come alive with a series of Reich influenced events, conversations, screenings, surprise collaborations and other disruptive adventures invading the city and adding some Festival engagement.

Our plans include:

Revealing Reich: talks on Reich’s music and his effect on other people’s music.

Clapping Music Flash Mob: making Reich’s repertoire accessible and fun.

Secret Gig: Special impromptu event to be revealed on the day.

Alternative Angelus: Impromptu musical performances at 5pm daily during the Festival.

For this to happen we need to pay for venues, rehearsals, lights, sound and ham sandwiches and everything else that goes into these events. We can’t make these pop up interventions happen without your support!
